Liam's a fantastic and exceptional teacher, and I feel like we definitely covered all the fundamentals and essentials when it comes to DJing, especially beatmatching, which really is the backbone and foundation of DJing. The course helped me build confidence, push myself to learn new skills and take more risks. I gained so much knowledge that I’ve taken away and implemented in my own career over the years. I’d highly recommend Liam to anyone serious about learning to DJ properly."

He taught me the skills I needed to practise in my own time, explained in a lot of detail but easy to understand. Liam fast-tracked my learning and got me ready to perform live much sooner than I thought. I wouldn’t have developed the same skills or confidence trying to teach myself. Because of his experience, I fully trusted what I was being taught, which gave me a lot of confidence playing in front of crowds. I highly recommend Liam to anyone serious about DJing, especially in the more underground genres and styles."

"Liam has been helping my son Efan over the last few months, getting him ready for some big gigs at major UK festivals. Not only has Efan's technical skills improved but Liam has really installed confidence in him along with helping him how to build a set. Efan being only 11yrs old has really reached new heights in his sets, showing maturity way beyond his years. He now has a deep understanding of how a set should be and fit to different scenarios. Would highly recommend Liam to anyone from age 8 to 80."

Learning under the On Beat Course i honestly the best thing I’ve done, I was someone that has always dreamt of becoming a full time DJ, I knew how to do the basics but wasn’t confident enough to push myself out there for booking, after I done a couple of lessons with the Liam I can say my confidence went a lot higher where I have now started my own event
Laura
Perfect for beginners who want a clear structure and proper guidance, especially if you want to build confidence and learn the right fundamentals from the start even if your goal is just to play for fun with friends

I simply wanted to be able to DJ confidently when playing with friends and the course gave me exactly that. Liam is a class act. He holds a deep knowledge of DJing and Production but meets you at your level and to your own taste in music. He teaches in a way that explains the concept but then lets you personally develop it on your own terms.

Yes. I’ve taught many self-taught DJs and DJs who have completed other popular online courses, and all were missing at least one key detail that instantly improved their mixes once corrected.
Some of the most Popular online courses are tailored to more commercial DJ styles, whereas this course specialises in underground electronic music such as house, techno and garage, where longer transitions mixing and more attention to detail are essential.
Course that are led by well-known DJs who may have strong performance experience but very limited teaching experience, meaning important details aren’t always clearly broken down and explained at a beginner level.
By learning the fundamentals properly with On Beat, you can identify and correct these mistakes before performing live, using techniques proven to work on real club sound systems.
Intermediate.
By the end of the course you’ll have the knowledge and resources to confidently practise and develop the core skills required for DJing underground electronic music genres such as house, techno and garage.
If your goal is to perform live, mastering these fundamentals ensures you can be confident your techniques will work in a real DJ set.
See the Course Structure page for the full breakdown of skills covered.
Suitable for complete beginners, self-taught DJs, and even more experienced DJs who feel something is missing from their skill set.
While the course is built with beginners in mind, it often highlights gaps in the fundamentals for more experienced DJs too. Many self-taught DJs, and even some who have previously had lessons, find key details were never fully explained.
The fundamentals are taught in depth, focusing not only on how to perform each technique, but why and when to apply it in your mix, helping you DJ with confidence and intent.
Estimated minimum 15 hours.
It’s difficult to give an exact completion time because the course includes practical exercises that should be practised between lessons. The total time will depend on how much you practise each skill before moving on.
The course is designed to be completed at your own pace and can be re-watched as many times as you like.
There are 9+ hours of video content and 70 guided practical exercises.
You can learn entirely at your own pace.
There are no deadlines or schedules.
The course is available to access 24/7.
No. Unlike some online courses, the structure is fixed.
The order of the lessons is intentional, as many skills build on the ones before them. Learning them in the correct sequence is essential for developing strong fundamentals and understanding how the techniques connect.
The course is designed so that when you perform your first mix, you already have the knowledge needed for it to sound great and to give you confidence progressing through the practical exercises.
Patience and trusting the process are key. Following the course in the intended order will help you progress faster than jumping between topics.

The course focuses on all styles and sub-gneres of house, techno and garage.
These genres share many of the same DJ techniques and mixing approaches, which is why they form the core focus of the course.
However, the fundamental skills taught can still be applied across more commercial electronic dance music genres once understood.
The 50 practice tracks included as a free download cover the following styles:
Tech House · Deep House · Afro House · Techno · Melodic Techno · Garage
During the course you’ll also be shown how to start building your own music library and the best ways to access music, so you have full control to apply the course techniques to your own tracks.
No. You don’t need your own music library to start.
However, you’ll be encouraged and shown how to begin building your own library during the course, including how to access music through downloading or streaming (where supported by your equipment). The pros and cons of each option are explained so you can make an informed decision based on your budget and setup.
You’ll also receive 50 tracks as free downloads, which are used throughout the exercises so you can replicate exactly what is demonstrated in the lessons.
For most exercises, it’s also easy to use your own tracks if you prefer, so you don’t need to feel restricted to only using the tracks provided.

Tutor Experience:
Look for a tutor with both real DJ experience and teaching experience. Being a great DJ does not automatically mean someone knows how to teach. Many courses are led by well-known or A-list DJs, which can look impressive, but they won't have experience working with beginners or explaining techniques clearly at the right level.
Genre & Style:
Make sure the course is relevant to the genres you want to play. Techniques can vary depending on style. For example, underground electronic genres such as house, techno and garage often require a different approach to mixing than more commercial DJ styles.
Structure & Options:
A good course should also follow a clear structure. Some courses allow you to choose what topics to learn and in what order. While this may seem appealing, DJ skills build on one another, so learning them in the correct sequence is important for developing strong fundamentals.
My approach is that you should be able to trust the tutor’s experience to guide the order of learning. The course is structured so each skill prepares you for the next, removing guesswork and helping you progress more efficiently.
Course Graduates:
Finally, check reviews and past student results to see whether the course has genuinely helped DJs improve.
Pricing:
When comparing courses, consider the value of the tuition alongside the money you have already invested in DJ equipment and music. Learning the fundamentals properly is an investment in your long-term progress as a DJ.
For example, if the course helps you reach the level needed to play live, only a few bookings could cover the cost of the course. More importantly, strong fundamentals will help you perform confidently, play better sets and build a positive reputation that leads to more opportunities.
Knowledge and skills stay with you for life, whereas equipment will eventually need replacing. Investing in learning can often have the greatest long-term impact on your DJ journey.
Look Beyond the Marketing
Don’t be distracted by big marketing budgets, gimmicks or attention-grabbing content designed mainly for engagement. While these can be entertaining, they don’t necessarily reflect the quality of the teaching itself.
Focus on the substance of the course rather than the marketing around it. Clear explanations, structured learning and practical exercises are far more important than viral videos or social media content.
In many ways it’s similar to discovering a great underground track as a DJ. It might not have the biggest name or the most hype, but it works where it matters most. I believe this course is like that, prioritising quality teaching and real results.
Tutor Experience
This course is taught by a DJ with both professional DJ experience and years of teaching experience. Having worked with hundreds of students, I understand the common mistakes beginners and self-taught DJs make and can address them before you potentially discover them yourself. Techniques are explained clearly and at the right level so they are easy to understand and apply in your mixes.
Tested DJ Techniques
All techniques taught in the course are based on methods I have personally used and refined over years of DJing in real club environments. The goal is to teach skills that actually work on a dancefloor.
I don’t teach the way I personally DJ. I demonstrate all techniques that are proven to work, so you can adopt and develop your own style.
Genre
The course focuses on underground electronic music such as house, techno and garage. It isn’t designed as a one-size-fits-all course trying to appeal to the widest possible market, but instead focuses on techniques that are most effective for these styles.
Detailed Practical Learning
You don’t just watch demonstrations. The course includes guided exercises with clear on-screen instructions so you can replicate each task closely using the same tracks and practise the techniques yourself.
The exercises also follow a gradual progression in difficulty, helping you build skills step by step while limiting frustration and maintaining steady progress.
Unique Learning Features
• Headphone channel recordings so you can hear exactly what the DJ hears while mixing
• 50 free practice tracks including official releases and exclusive beatmatching tracks
• Chapter notes (PDF) with key points and images for offline revision
• HD filming with animations and a multi-camera setup including overhead and screen views
Music Production Insight
As well as DJing, I also produce music and have released tracks signed to Atlantic Records and other labels. Producing music has also improved my DJing, as it helped me understand how tracks are structured and where the key creative moments are.
This allows me to explain in detail how tracks are built and structured, helping you approach DJing with more intent and better complement the music you are playing.
Proven Results
On Beat has received 5-star reviews on Google and Trustpilot, and past students have gone on to achieve a wide range of goals, from learning as a hobby to performing professionally.
Independent Course
On Beat is an independent course created by me as a passionate DJ and tutor. I’ve put a huge amount of time, care and attention into building this course because I genuinely want you to have the best possible learning experience.
Everything in the course is designed to help you understand the art properly, build real confidence, and leave feeling motivated and excited to continue progressing as a DJ.
